How the program has supported you

The Symposium was a set of competitions bringing together students from multiple universities, providing a fun experience where students showcase projects they have spent the entire school year working towards and meet engineering students from other cities. This year’s activities attracted over 200 registered student participants, with additional people involved as industry judges, volunteer event coordinators, team faculty advisors, and public spectators. Furthermore, the Symposium’s constituent competitions provided space for students to further develop their technical skills in extra-curricular, beyond-the-classroom projects. Overall, the Symposium served as a celebratory end-of-year event for students.

UBC ASCE originally applied for PAF funding to partially pay for event venue rentals, including Burnaby Lake, the Vancouver Convention Centre, and the War Memorial Gym. After transitioning to a virtual format due to the rise of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, PAF funding was instead used to pay for a Remo licence, a virtual conference platform.

Outcomes

Of the over 200 registered student participants, 50 were from UBC’s steel bridge team and a further 34 were from UBC’s concrete canoe team. These teams carry out their projects annually for the purpose of attending competitions, including those hosted by UBC ASCE this year. In preparing their projects for competitions, students developed and applied skills in structural engineering, project management, construction materials engineering, technical writing, and more. During competitions specifically, presentation skills including answering questions on the spot from industry judges were practised by UBC students. Furthermore, for the first time in the histories of both the steel bridge and concrete canoe teams, UBC advanced to ASCE Society-wide final competitions in the US as a result of their strong efforts at the Symposium hosted by UBC ASCE. This enabled further opportunity for UBC engineering students to network with others and refine their competitive presentation skills.
