How the program has supported you

NERV is an interdisciplinary project that our team has begun in the past year that focuses on the creation of a brain-computer interface. Our main goal for the project is to compete at CYBATHLON 2024 and attend challenges leading up to the main event. We have also been extending the work done for this project to the field of research. PAF’s contributions this year have permitted our team to jump start this project and begin our prototyping and testing phases of the device development as well as make progress on the research side. This funding has allowed students to understand BCI functionalities and get introduced to product research.

Outcomes

UBC Bionics is an interdisciplinary team of 40 students from varying faculties. Students involved are able to develop their soft skills working in a goal-oriented/project focused team environment and apply knowledge learned in class. For many students participating in this project, the biological context of a brain-computer interface has not been introduced previously in courses. This project provides clear integration of biological systems with engineering applications and expands upon course work to further explore the biomedical engineering discipline. Prototyping and testing of the project allows for students to develop their technical skills and work collaboratively with engineering students in other disciplines. Short term, students gain experience prototyping, working on an interdisciplinary team and coordinating with industry. Long term, students will be able to carry over their experience to CO-OP positions, industry settings and apply the knowledge gained from this project to similar fields in the future.
