How the program has supported you

The PAF program provided us with sufficient funding to hold in-person industry speaker series, including foods for everyone attending and gifts for the speakers. This event was combined with P21_019, as students can learn about grad school from two different perspectives, the faculty member and the other guest speakers who are doing/have done grad school. The event was held in person and food was prepared; however, there were fewer attendees than expected. Therefore, the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering was able to cover the spending, and the PAF amount for this event was not spent. Another event to replace this PD opportunity unfortunately did not happen due to the term 2 sudden change from in-person event back to remote policy.

Outcomes

This event was combined with PD Opportunity #2 – P21_019. One faculty member and three UBC alumni who had grad studies experience were invited. The event has helped CHBE students gain professional knowledge of different fields after grad school. The event has also helped CHBE students learn about the grad studies experience, different paths they may potentially take and get connected to the guest speakers. These direct and short-term benefits would help them explore their fields of interests and decide if grad studies or research is suitable for them to take after undergraduate programs. The estimated number of students benefited from this event was 50; however, about 30 people showed up, which might be due to that people were not used to in-person speaker events yet due to Covid-19. The replacement event unfortunately did not happen due to the term 2 sudden change from in-person event back to remote policy. People were a bit more active to attend when the event was in person (Very few people signed up for one of the other online events we held.)
