How the program has supported you

The program has funded the reagents and tools required for work in a research laboratory supporting student-led research. Students are able to engage in depth with the process of innovation and the practical operation of life science laboratories. Our team is able to move forward on actualizing our designs and theoretical concepts, allowing for their validation and evaluation as solutions for global challenges, all within the context of a design process that allows more latitude compared to traditional scientific settings. We are able to pose research questions, work through developing and executing evidence-based solution concepts, and interpret results towards refining and developing deliverables, developing a host of research skills in the process. The funding has allowed us access to technical and instrumentation solutions beyond that typically available to student-led initiatives, working synergistically with the ties we have developed with our advisors.

Outcomes

The project’s aim of designing a functional, effective structural solution supports various professional development outcomes by dint of its nature as a complex, long-term design process. Members develop transferable skills applicable to any professional environment such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication whilst also learning harder skills such as wet lab work, data analysis, and computational design. The project structure itself is projected to have a significant positive impact as an effective method of eliminating biofilms that pose a costly challenge to human safety in clinical and industrial settings. Members are able to develop by contributing in the development of a “real world” solution, facing and accounting for the complexities and challenges that are a natural part of any such process. Additionally, members are also able to gain perspective on other scientific fields from the interdisciplinary nature of our team and participate in scientific and professional development opportunities including workshops, competitions, and conferences.
