How the program has supported you
Papercrete is looking to produce sustainable concrete by substituting its substitute cement with paper dubbed papercrete. Our ultimate goal is to find a suitable composition of papercrete which can be used for everyday purposes where concrete may be used instead. This requires testing of different properties such as strength and water permeability. To do this, we need to first prepare moulds to cast our samples into. Hence, we have used the funds to purchase materials such as styrofoam and utility cutters to create moulds. The remaining funds are being used to purchase more equipment and materials, such as cylinder moulds and mdf panels, for sample creation and property testing for the coming term.
Outcomes
Our team hopes to produce a sustainable concrete alternative, named papercrete and investigate the properties of it as well as another alternative cement replacement, concrete. We would like to construct a functional papercrete bench to be used in UBC which promotes recycling of paper wastes acquired from the university itself. From this past year, our members have obtained a different array of soft skills which include prototyping, arts and crafts as well as Life Cycle Analysis through softwares like OpenLCA, Solidworks and Microsoft Office. In the upcoming term, we are aiming to hone in on hard skills in testing different properties by utilizing various equipment and machines. These skills would be extremely beneficial for our members as they will engage in critical thinking and learn to apply knowledge practically. This will prepare them for their future career if they are utilizing these skills again.
