How the program has supported you

With the recycled paddle board, we hope to reduce the amount of plastic entering the ocean, reduce the amount of waste produced and resources used, and educate our peers about the importance of ocean sustainability. We believe that our project can achieve this by creating a recycled paddle board, which will show that materials seen as “waste” can be repurposed into something useful instead of ending up in our waterways. Simultaneously, this will also allow the user to appreciate the ocean through recreation.

The PAF funding has supported our project by allowing us to ovens and a RYOBI scroll saw to create our recycled paddle board. These tools will remain in the laboratory for others to use in the future, thus giving them a long life and contributing to WasteNauts’ future circular economy focused projects

Furthermore, PAF gave us the opportunity to take courses on circular economy and SolidWorks, both important topics for this project and our professional lives.

Outcomes

The project team members developed research, and communication skills throughout the design process by presenting our ideas at WasteNauts’ meetings.

Two of our project members organized a beach clean-up to educate eight student attendees about sustainability and the importance of recycling.

Additionally, the project members took courses in SolidWorks, thus developing important technical skills for both the project and their professional life.
