How the program has supported you
This project helped our team to partake in lunch and learns with industry professionals. Lunch and learns, like the one with RJC Engineers, allowed for us to get feedback on designs, build a greater understanding of concepts not covered in our programs, and to receive input on our final presentation that we made at competition. The funding secured with PAF allowed us to thank the industry professionals in a variety of forms, like a chocolate gift basket, donuts, or gift cards for Uber Eats.
Outcomes
The 2022 EERI SDC set in Salt Lake City, Utah, challenged our 28 person design team with a 19-story tower that needed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. It featured unique structural design constraints like a 7-story atrium, and a narrow section that ran from the 10th to 15th floors. During the competition our skills for structural design, geotechnical engineering, and collaboration were all tested. Working as a team we attempted to maximize the usable floor area of the tower, while also having as strong a design we could. Throughout the process we engaged with local engineering firms to get input, and ultimately find some inspiration for the damping device we integrated into our tower. Ultimately our design did survive the shake test, but we still earned second in architecture, third in communications, and an award for spirit of the competition.
