How the program has supported you
Subbots is dedicated to making an AUV for the annual RoboSub competition in San Diego, California, where teams compete in a series of tasks that are designed to mimic real world design challenges. Half of our team’s annual budget is dedicated to designing, building and testing our robot to get it ready for competition. This requires specialized equipment and facilities such as tools, electronic equipment, raw materials, and pool time for testing. The other half of the team’s budget goes towards competition expenses which includes registration, round trip flights, accommodation and transportation. It’s the team’s goal each year to send as many students to competition as possible so members can see their work in action. PAF is one of our team’s main funding sources and we rely on it to be able to build our robot and send members to competition.
Outcomes
Due to a sudden change in competition date and venue by Robonation (competition was moved from July 25-31 in San Diego to July 28-Aug 2 in Baltimore), we weren’t able to have enough members available to attend the 2022 competition in person. Our participation in the competition included a technical report and a presentation video. Note that due to the sudden change in venue, we were also not able to spend the amount we set aside in the PAF budget for competition travel.
Despite the setback, all 30 members of our team were able to acquire practical design experience in their areas of interest. This year, our team focused on designing a new revision to our robot with extended functionalities such as actuation and acoustic localization. The new revision allowed members to experience the design process from scratch and solve various challenges relating to mechanical, electrical, and software design.
