How the program has supported you

Our student chapter was able to attend the 2023 Regions 8&9 Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders hosted by the America Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in Anaheim California. This allowed us to represent UBC which was the only Canadian university present at the conference. Students attending were able to develop their leadership skills, learn about the society’s resources, and network with fellow civil engineers from across North America. The information provided at the conference regarding resources available through the ASCE such as online tool kits, fundraising methods, and connections to professionals with valuable experience will be integral to the success of the 2024 symposium that we are planning to host.

Outcomes

By participating in this conference students learned about leadership and specific operational skills regarding their role in the student chapter. Student leadership training in the form of group activities, guest speakers, and the study of accomplished leaders directly contributed to the development of professional engineering skills. Participating members also learn about ASCE financial structures, details regarding hosting the 2024 symposium, securing sponsorships, presentation skills, and much more. Immediately the benefits of these teaching are reflected in the functionality and success of the existing UBC ASCE Student Chapter team. Short-term effects will be evident through the growth and prosperity of the student chapter via the mentorship of the younger members. Long-term benefits of the leadership skill obtained by participating conference members and in turn future ASCE members will be the improvement of the entire civil engineering discipline.
