How the program has supported you

IAC 2022 presented an excellent opportunity for UBC Mars Colony to publish the work done on our latest project. We hope our paper will help people study the Sabatier reaction by detailing the construction of our low-cost reactor. Our goal for attending the conference was to present our paper in the Student Competition, as well as to network with the aerospace companies present and represent the team, UBC, and Canada on the international stage of space research. The PAF funding allowed us to offset the costs of buying trans-Atlantic tickets to and from Paris, thus allowing members who would otherwise find the conference cost-prohibitive to attend the conference.

Outcomes

The members attended several days of the conference and got to network with major companies in the field of space studies and engineering like Thales, Boeing, and BlueOrigin, as well as several space agencies like NASA, CSA, and ESA. The members also had the chance to network fellow Canadian students and professionals at a breakfast hosted by CSA. The two main presenters got to practice their public speaking skills in front of an international audience, and everyone got to represent the team and UBC in conversations with other conference attendees. The other members of the team benefited indirectly, as the members who went shared their experiences with the members who could not come. Additionally, several more members were involved in writing the published paper, improving their professional writing skills.
