How the program has supported you

The program has allowed us to purchase the equipment (jars, aeration system, tubes, etc) necessary for us to begin experimentation and testing of the effect of different media on various strains of the yeast Pichia pastoris. This has been invaluable in our efforts to produce a naturally fluorescent beer.

Outcomes

Fluorescence has been observed in fermented products (so the project has been successful), but additional experimentation is necessary to begin scaling up from the benchtop, and to improve results. This project allowed the students on the team (4 people) to develop skills related to microbiology, the engineering of fermentation systems, experimental design, and project budgeting and planning.
