How the program has supported you
After nearly two years online, the team returned to in-person work with aspirations of heading to competition for the first time since 2017. We got hard at work finishing the manufacturing of our car, Daybreak, while preparing to make the journey down to Kansas for the Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP). The financial freedom provided by PAF allowed the team to finish our car and travel to FSGP where we made team history by racing on the track for the first time ever. This largest milestone in the team’s history was greatly aided by PAF. Additionally, the funds provided have gone into the team’s next-generation car, Brightside, aiding in the purchase of materials necessary to manufacture it. Furthermore, the team has purchased tools and equipment that will replace many old and/or broken items and stick with the team for years to come. PAF has helped the team accomplish so much through multiple essential purchases.
Outcomes
UBC Solar came a long way this year, starting the year online and with uncertainty, we weren’t sure if we would be able to get back in the swing of things quickly. However, this was no deterrent, and the team reached many milestones this year, most notably reaching competition and racing for the first time, placing 9th out of 14 teams in the Formula Sun Grand Prix. This is the largest achievement in team history, and has been our goal all along. Apart from this, the team gained plenty of hands-on experience with design and manufacturing as we prepared Daybreak for the race, something we were not able to provide over the pandemic. This is especially important for us as one of our core values is educating engineering students.
