How the program has supported you

The goal of Formula UBC Racing (FUBC) is to enhance its member education through an extracurricular project. Working in an environment that simulates a real life job develops technical knowledge as well as countless soft skills including communication, leadership, planning, budgeting and many more.

During a typical year FUBC designs, builds and races a formula style car against 120 other university teams. In order to create a competitive car the team must use a variety of custom tools and materials. PAF supports the professional development of FUBC members by providing funds for these tools and supplies. Over the past year PAF funding was specifically used for purchasing vehicle components that are required for producing a car that can compete at competition, specifically wheels, engine components, and data acquisition systems.

Outcomes

Formula UBC Racing has had many years of experience with carbon fiber composites and this project was the next logical step in the development of our knowledge. Currently, the members involved with this project have engineered a number of test panels and manufacturing processes meeting rules requirements and chassis design requirements. This has taught the members many new skills which have not been previously explored by the team and can not feasibly be built anywhere else.

Through this project members of Formula UBC Racing have built their engineering skills developing solutions in the face of numerous, complex and far reaching requirements and objectives. The most important engineering skill developed by the monocoque project is managing high levels of uncertainty present when developing solutions to problems that the team hasn’t faced before.
