How the program has supported you

The Silvertip project was a brand new competition rocket for UBC rocket in the year 2021/2022. The goal is to launch the rocket in the 2022 IREC competition as well as serve as a training opportunity for newer members to get more rocketry experiences. The project went through numerous challenges, including leadership changes, a final design change 2 months before the competition and a speedy manufacturing period. We were able to overcome these challenges with the support of the PAF which allowed us to acquire critical components in a timely manner. This also provides team members with the freedom to pursue their own design without considering the budget issue too much. With the support of PAF, we were able to finish the project on time and had a successful launch.

Outcomes

Silvertip was completed on time and went to the 2022 IREC competition. It had a predicted accent and but a small recovery issue caused the lower section of the rocket to have a hard landing. The onboard flight footage we submitted was awarded as top launch footage for the event, winning the GoPro Challenge. Silvertip is an active team of 18, performing tasks in a wide range of disciplines including mechanical design/manufacturing, composite material manufacturing, electronics and programming. Students benefited directly by practicing the knowledge they have learned on this project, such as familiarizing themselves with the design process, programming the flight computer and using FEA to analyze the components. Because building rockets is such a unique experience, all things learned from working on this project will become more memorable that students can recall and apply to future tasks.
