How the program has supported you

UBC Steel Bridge’s project focused on building beyond what we learn in the classroom and put it into practice through designing and fabricating a 20 ft long steel bridge. Steel Bridge has provided industry level technical and software experience to students, applied at an international level of quality. The annual competitions, specifically the National Student Steel Bridge Competition, allow members to put our engineering knowledge to the test and see our teamwork come to life. With the help of the PAF funding, the team was able to directly help fund the competition traveling expenses for more students, and allow them to experience the in-person competition, make UBC Steel Bridge’s name memorable on an international stage, and increase our sponsorship prospects with more content for our social media.

Outcomes

12 students, ranging from new first year engineering students to senior fourth year civil engineering students, attended the National Student Steel Bridge Competition. Through the competition, we were able to benefit from seeing the caliber of engineering ingenuity of bridge designs and construction sequences of the top teams in the 11 North American regions. As the first in-person competition in 3 years, the competition and symposium provides a great opportunity to network with engineering students and faculty advisors from other universities with the same passion of bridge engineering. In the long term, attending the competition benefits the team morale and inspiration for future years of the team, fostering future leads and transfer of knowledge with new ideas for the UBC Steel Bridge, whether it is for the technical design process or team community building aspect.
